How to Take a Screenshot on Windows 10 and Windows 11

You can use the print screen button or snipping tool apps to take a screenshot in Windows 10 and Windows 11. You can use the Game Bar by pressing Windows Key + G to take a screen recording. You can also use third party apps that offer more features. If you want to take a screenshot on your computer and save the screenshot, there are many ways in Windows 10 and Windows 11. I am going to elaborate on all the best ways to take a screenshot on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

The Print Screen Button

The best way to take a screenshot on Windows 10 or Windows 11 is with the Print Screen(PrtScn) key. To capture your full screen, normally press the (PrtScn) button on the upper right-side of your keyboard.



In Windows 10, the screenshot will be copied to clipboard. To save the file and paste the screenshot into any program, like Paint or Microsoft Word that allows inserting images.

In windows 11, pressing the (PrtScn) button will save your screenshot to your computer’s screenshots folder. To find the screenshot open File Explorer and select Pictures folder. It will also save the images to your OneDrive.

The Windows Key + Print Screen

In Windows 10, to take a screenshot and immediately save the file press the Windows Key and PrtScn. The screen will go dim and take a screenshot of your full screen and will save to the Screenshots folder.


In Windows 11, pressing the Windows Key and PrtScn will save a picture of full screen to the Screenshots folder and copy the picture to your clipboard. This will let you automatically paste the image into the social media.

ALT + Print Screen

Press Alt + PrtScn, to take the screenshot of your active window. In Windows 10, this will copy it to your clipboard. To save it you will need to paste it to another program. In Windows 11, it will copy and save it to the Screenshots folder.

The Snip and Sketch Tool for Windows 10

The best way is to take the screenshot with the Windows 10’s Snip and Sketch tool. You can customize, annotate, and share your screen screenshot.



To activate the Snip and Sketch tool, press the shortcut keys all together: Windows Key +Shift + S. Your screen will go dim and a mini menu will appear at the top of your screen. It gives you the option to take a rectangular, free-form, window, and full screen capture.

With these options you can choose the ways to take the screenshot.

Rectangular Mode-Draw a rectangle for your screenshot
Free-form Mode- Draw free-hand with your cursor
Window Mode- Select a specific window to capture
Full Screen Mode- Take a screenshot of your full screen.


Whenever you capture the screenshot, it will be saved to your clipboard and a message will show in the right corner of your window. To open the notification message, click on the preview message icon. You can save, share, or edit the images with paint tools.

The Snipping Tool in Windows 11

The Snipping Tool is existing both in Windows 10 and Windows 11. But in Windows 11, the Snipping Tool got a major upgrade to take the custom screenshots.



In Windows 11, press the Windows Key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool. Your screen will go dim and a screenshot option will appear at the top of your screen. These options will give you a rectangular, full window, free-form or full screen capture.

Whenever you capture the screenshot, it will be saved to your clipboard and you can save to your folder, share to your social media, and edit with drawing tools.

The Game Bar

You can use the Game Bar to take screenshots in Windows apps and games. Please press Windows Key + G to open the Game Bar. If it doesn’t open, enable the Game Bar. To enable Game Bar go to: Start > Setting > Gaming.



On the options menu to take a screenshot please press the camera icon. You can record video by pressing the record button and also record audio by pressing the microphone icon.

The screenshot and video clips are saved in PNG format to the Videos Folder>Captures Folder. You can also find the captures through the Game Bar, clicking on the ”Show all captures”.


Power  +  Volume Up Button

In Windows 10, to take a screenshot with Microsoft Surface device press the Power + Volume Up Button. The screen will go dim and your screenshot will be saved to the Pictures > Screenshot folder.
